When you have a business, it’s important to get noticed by your target audience, and remind your customers who you are and what you do. You can do this in two ways – Marketing and PR. Both are important to consider as you continue to grow your business and your reputation within your industry.

What is PR and why do I need it to grow my business

Public Relations is about reputation – the result of what you do, what you say and what others say about you.

Public Relations is the discipline which looks after reputation, with the aim of earning understanding and support and influencing opinion and behaviour. It is the planned and sustained effort to establish and maintain goodwill and mutual understanding between an organisation and its publics.

Within your business, not only do you need to consider your personal reputation, and that of your team, and those who work with you and for you, but your business name will be building a reputation too. Public relations, or PR for short, is how you manage your personal and business reputation.

PR can’t be paid for, or managed in the same way as you can manage a marketing campaign, and pay for adverts to reach your target audience at a certain time, in a certain place of your choosing. Public relations is constant. It includes your customer service, and the whole start to finish of the customer journey with your business. PR is also how you are perceived by others who aren’t your customers in the wider community through media and online forums and social media.

You can do your own PR

Your customer service and customer journey through your business is an internal mechanism to ensure you maintain an excellent reputation for yourself and your business. You will train staff and team members to act in accordance with your business guidelines and policies. You will allow them to act on behalf of the business, and represent the business to the outside world. That’s doing your own PR. You’re totally responsible for this in your business, and it is likely to be part of your natural way of growing your business. When you set systems up, you’ll be aware of how you want customers to be treated

There’s also the wider public relations of connecting with your target audience through the media and via social media channels and forums relevant to your industry that you need to consider. This is what is traditionally thought of as PR and media relations. You can do your own PR and media relations, and as your business grows you may contract with a PR specialist to carry out public relations and create media opportunities for you. As your business reputation is at stake, you need to totally trust your PR expert.

So whether you do your own PR or you contract someone else, you need to be really clear about what PR is and how you can make the most of the opportunities as they arise for you and your business. I recommend you learn from a PR expert and then put those PR skills into action for yourself and your business. Practice makes perfect as they say! 😉
